So here is what happened today: A staffing agency that I submitted my resume to last month called me today and said that there is an indefinite-temporary clerical position in Falls Church but that they want someone who can start tomorrow. I still have two more shifts at my retail job and that includes tomorrow, Christmas Eve, which promises to be one of the busiest days of the year. I told the agency that I really wanted to do the job but could not bail on my retail position on Christmas Eve. They said that if they found someone who could start tomorrow they would have to offer them the position, but if they couldn't, they would ask if a Monday start is acceptable. Of course someone is going to say yes to the offer, though, with jobs as hard to come by as they are.
I thought I was doing the right thing by honoring my commitment to the department store, even though my time there is almost done, especially since it is going to be insanely busy and I know that they need me there. But now I kind of feel like a schmuck for turning down a job. I mean, I am about now in desperate need of a new job and I turned one down because of a job that is almost over? What do other people think? Please, be honest even if it stings.
